Lab Manager

The Carney Institute for Brain Science is launching a new Carney Fellows program to leverage the complementary strengths of academia and industry in the areas of computational neuroscience, computational psychiatry & neurology, and neurotechnology. Dr. Frederike Petzschner will be the first Carney Fellow and serve as the Director of the program. This position will serve as the Lab Manager for Dr. Frederike Petzschner’s lab. The successful candidate will:

 

  • be conducting large online (smartphone and web-based) and local (EEG and/or behavioral) experiments involving physiological measurements (e.g. ECG).
  • will support the development of smartphone-based applications to test human perception and learning in collaboration with software engineers, scientist and designers.
  • will support the development of the new Brainstorm program at Carney. This includes administrative and scientific support of other fellows in the same program.

Required Experience: Bachelor in Physics, Mathematics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Medicine, Computer Science or a related field of study

  • has experience with large-scale online data acquisition (e.g. MTurk) (optional)
  • knows how to speak Matlab and/or Python and use version control (e.g. Git)

Open PostDoc Position

The Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science at Brown University is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the laboratory of Frederike Petzschner, working in collaboration with Prof. Michael Frank, Prof. Thomas Serre and Prof. Steven Rasmussen.

The successful candidate will undertake high-quality, high-impact research in the area of computational psychiatry at the new Center for Computational Brain Science at Brown University.

The work will focus on the development and optimization of behavioral tasks and computational models aimed at characterizing perception and learning, in both the mentally well and unwell (e.g., investigating their interplay with mood & (psycho)somatic symptom dynamics). The goal is to develop novel markers (i.e., individual characteristics of time perception, interoception and reward learning) and interventions based on computational brain research that will be leveraged in concrete clinical applications.

The postdoc will be supported by a team of professionals — software engineers, designers and scientists — to deploy these tests on our own smartphone application, which includes physiological measurements. The project is highly interdisciplinary and takes a new approach to combining basic computational research with translational technology. Thus, we welcome diverse perspectives and will encourage contribution of new ideas throughout all aspects of research and application development.

Research Intern with a Background in Software Engineering

The Center for Computation and Visualization is looking for a student eager to help develop a modern React Native mobile application for Prof Petzschner dedicated to study and prevent chronic pain. The student will get exposure to modern software engineering practices and will have an opportunity to work together with member’s of Prof, Petzschner lab, RISD students, and other interns and members of CCV who work in related projects. Familiarity with React Native or React is strongly recommended.
